I have been asked by a friend to make her a rosary necklace. I am not familiar with rosaries but am trying to learn. I know there are 10 beads and then a 'father' bead that is supposed to be larger, but do the ten beads have to all be the same? Or do they just all need to be smaller than the father beads?
the ten beads do need to be a marked size different from the larger bead.
OR
at least create some sort of more pronounced space between the ten small and the larger bead.
The reason for this is not religious in nature,
but
for assistance in the meditating.
As the Rosary is recited the feel of the beads is very very important.
The person praying is often lost deep in thought and contemplation and needs the feel of the bead's change in size to distinguish the end of a decade and the start of the next mystery(Our Father bead).
Peace

THERE ARE FIFTEEN PROMISES OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN TO CHRISTIANS WHO FAITHFULLY PRAY THE ROSARY
1 To all those who shall pray my Rosary devoutly, I promise my special protection and great graces.
2 Those who shall persevere in the recitation of my Rosary will receive some special grace.
3 The Rosary will be a very powerful armor against hell; it will destroy vice, deliver from sin and dispel heresy.
4 The rosary will make virtue and good works flourish, and will obtain for souls the most abundant divine mercies. It will draw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
5 Those who trust themselves to me through the Rosary will not perish.
6 Whoever recites my Rosary devoutly reflecting on the mysteries, shall never be overwhelmed by misfortune. He will not experience the anger of God nor will he perish by an unprovided death. The sinner will be converted; the just will persevere in grace and merit eternal life.
7 Those truly devoted to my Rosary shall not die without the sacraments of the Church.
8 Those who are faithful to recite my Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plenitude of His graces and will share in the merits of the blessed.
9 I will deliver promptly from purgatory souls devoted to my Rosary.
10 True children of my Rosary will enjoy great glory in heaven.
11 What you shall ask through my Rosary you shall obtain.
12 To those who propagate my Rosary I promise aid in all their necessities.

I can only find a few resources online, and I rather like praying with the 15-Decade Rosary that the Dominicans use with their habits (though, I'm not exactly at the stage wear I would seek to don one, i.e. consecrated life). Can anyone help?
Flying-Wonderful! I look forward to hearing what they say.
There are a number of monasteries who make them. Do you want a specifically Dominican rosary? Most monastics, like Carmelites, and many evangelicals, like Franciscans, wear the 15 decade rosary. Benedictines, Carthusians, Augustinians.
Pick your charism and go from there. Check E-Bay regularly. Many of them make rosaries and sell them on e-bay.
Consider making one from twine before you make a serious investment. They're easy. You can pick up twine at most craft or hardware stores. Then his Rosary Army to learn how to make a barrel knot. I'll post the link below. I recommend a thick twine for your first. Thinner twine is difficult to knot.
I get my twine from FNT online because I love the colors. I'd make you one but I'm moving and have NO idea what box the twine is packed in.
I recommend buying a nickel silver crucifix. The cross of pardon if you can find one. Rather than a knotted cross. Or use one of those big ol Benedictine crucifixes.
The Franciscan Crown, or "Rosary of the Seven Joys of the Blessed Virgin Mary" -- also known as the "Seraphic Rosary" -- is a 7-decade Rosary that focuses on the 7 Joys of Mary. It's an ancient Franciscan sacramental that has its origins in A.D. 1422. It originally consisted of one Our Father and 10 Hail Mary in honor of each of her Seven Joys -- the Annunciation; Visitation; Nativity; Adoration of the Magi; Finding Jesus in the Temple; Resurrection; and Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin.
Usual 5 decade Rosary
The purpose of the Rosary is to help keep in memory certain principal events or mysteries in the history of our salvation, and to thank and praise God for them. There are twenty mysteries reflected upon in the Rosary, and these are divided into the five JOYFUL MYSTERIES, the five LUMINOUS MYSTERIES, the five SORROWFUL MYSTERIES, and the five GLORIOUS MYSTERIES.
Seven Decade Rosary
Seven decades of 10 Hail Marys equal 70 Hail Marys, but two more were later added to make the total equal to seventy-two, the number of years that Our Lady is said to have lived on earth.
One may also add a Pater, Ave, and Gloria at the very end for the intentions of the Holy Fathe
When saying a decade of the rosary do you say the prayers before the ten hail mary's or do you just start into the hail mary's and finish with the glory be, O my Jesus and an our father? What? I know how to say a full rosary and that saying a full one is better but I've been told you can pray a decade if a full rosary isn't optional.
