religious statue

Hi. How do I take care of my chalk ware statue? Should I keep it away from humidity? I have a humidifier that I use in my room and I am afraid to ruin my religious statue. I have placing the statue in the closet for safe-keeping at night. By the way, how should I clean it? I assume no water but how do I preserve it.

Museums try to keep an even moisture level - just keep it constant. A humidifier used properly is a good idea. Going from dry to humid to dry, constantly is not a good idea.

Also keep it out of direct sunlight - could fade the paint.

Could put it under a glass dome if you are very worried about it, but this could be considered excessive.

If it is dusty, some times just dusting with a brush would be enough to clean it. Just be careful not to chip the paint off.

I have an old statue of the virgin Mary and I wanted to repaint it....but not in a traditional way. I'm NOT going to put any derogatory terms or crude references on the statue, but I want to give it a modern, unconventional sort of look. Like, some sort of crazy color scheme or design, something that's different.

Will I be disrespecting anyone or anything like that if I were to do this?

I'm curious to know how one would know that it's the virgin Mary? Did somebody take a picture of her sometime in the past? Your statue is just that, it's some man's idea of what he thinks she looked like. Paint whatever you want to on it. It won't matter except to someone who believes it's holy and the last time I checked, my bible says to not make graven images or to bow down to them.

St. Joseph. You bury him upside down next to the house. When the house sells, you dig him up and give him a place of honor in your new house (on the fireplace mantel etc.) But you do have to believe, and it helps to be a Catholic.

In the present real estate market, you might do better with St. Jude (patron of hopeless cases).

I can't recall which one it is. It's the statue you bury upside down in your yard for luck when you have your home on the market.

Mom even knew the appropriate spot in the back yard....alas, i do not.
