Anyone an avid collector of religious (catholic) statuary?
Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes

looking for an avid collector of religious statuary (preferably christian catholic).. i'm a student looking to briefly speak with someone via e-mail about their collection, how they started collected, what interests them, and anything you'd like to say about religious statues/your collection in general. specifically, what is it you love about these statues? any input is greatly appreciated.

I have a small collection of religious statues that I've picked up in thrift stores and antique shops. I like unusual statues of the Blessed Virgin, and my favorites are two hand-carved Black Madonnas, one from Africa and one from South America. I also have a number of Nativity scenes, chosen for their uniqueness and aesthetic appeal. My favorite is an alabaster set that was given to my parents by Hungarian immigrants shortly after I was born.

I started collecting religious statues when I was in college because I love the way that they remind me of God's Presence and His care for us. I've restored several of the older ones, and I like the idea of preserving folk art. These statues obviously had meaning for someone, and I like to think that I am allowing them to continue to do their work of inspiration and consolation.

Like I said, my collection isn't huge, but each piece has a special meaning for me. I hope this information helps you, and God bless!

Garden Statue-Religious?
Mission San Juan Capistrano

My mom was told that she could pick out a statue for her garden, but she has been unable to find one yet. She wants it to be something that can withstand outdoor conditions, and to be religious (Catholic). Do you have any suggestions?
Be specific...links to statues would be appreciated.

Well I am from northern California and there are many Hispanic catholics around here that do things like that. I see a lot of them have a statue of the Virgin Mary, or some other saint that they identify with alot. I see these sorts of statues all the time at flea markets where you find merchants who make and sell things for their own business. I've also seen this sort of statue at stores that sell lots of landscaping pottery and outdoor things like fountains and huge pots.

Below I have linked a page I found with a good variety of religious statues that don't cost too much.

Practicing Catholics . . . Do you have religious symbols (art, statues) of Mary in your home?
Mission San Juan Capistrano

I don't mean just at Christmas, but year round? My priest last week was talking about religious art in our homes showing others we are Catholics. I have one statue of Mary on a bookshelf and Our Lady of Perpetual help picture in my bedroom. What do you have displayed?

I have a prominently displayed crucifix in my home. This is to remind me of what is the center of my life.

Since most Protestants would only have a cross and not a crucifix, this would tell any visitors that my family and I are Catholic.

With love in Christ.

Why Roman Catholics have or created "religious" images, statues, etc.?
Five Nurses and a Virgin

One Roman Catholic explained that Images are not confined to tangible things; it's also created or formed in one's mind (intangible). That those who were forbidden to create images were those who dont know the true God is. He cited that instance when Moses was leading the Israerites away from Egypt - that rod to be made, the ark of the covenant, etc. Catholic church forbid "worship" of images

In a lighter mood he said that the dominantly non-Roman Catholic America has one of the largest image in the world - the Statue of Liberty - and this is not for worship.

The statues or images are not worshipped or prayed to. The statues, images, etc. are used to remind people to pray, remind them of the saints, Mary, Jesus, God, etc. Catholics are not praying to Mary, they talk to Mary and ask her to pray to God on their behalf. Similar to how some ask other people in their church to pray for them. If you ask your pastor to pray for you it is no different than asking Mary or a saint to pray for you as well. One is merely in spirit rather than in a body.

Catholics worship and pray to God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
