What is the main difference in doctrine between the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and the Lutheran..?
Saint Mark's Evangelical Church

Church-Missouri Synod

Sakurah's reference to What About... from LCMS sums up the differences up to 1997. A lot has happened since.

ELCA and their partner Synod in Canada are now in Altar and Pulpit fellowship with the Anglican (Episcopal) Church. They have issued statements condoning homosexual marriage, communed infants, Issued statments denying the Divine and literal nature of the bible. The Anglican Church has Female Bishops and Clergy, And have Ordained practicing homosexuals to the Priesthood.

Unfortunately I could go on and on and on.

Remember: Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, Sola Gratia.

Is the lutheran church an Episcopal polity with dioceses and bishops or is it presbyterian polity with elders?

what are the defining differences between the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS)?

It is more episcopal in style - but the bishops do not have that much influence on what goes on. In the LCMS church, they do have elders within a congregation.

LCMS is basically a more conservative and more traditional Lutheran church. They maintain more traditional services etc. The ELCA is a little less traditional - they also allow the ordination of women as pastors. They are slightly more liberal.

That is really all the difference that I know of. I hope you find this helpful!

Peace!

what is the difference between lutheran and the Evangelical or babtist religion?

My boy friend is lutheran, and i go to an evangelical covenant church and i don't understand the difference between them is there any at all? they both belive in God and that he died for our sins but is there any big difference?

If the evangelical covenant church you go to IS a Baptist church, then there are some differences. Yes, you both believe in God and that Jesus died for our sins, but the differences are in method of worship and some of the rules of living.

Lutherans are a little more conservative than the Baptist church, they have formalized worship services like that of a Catholic church, basically a lot of corporate prayer and recitation. They also use real wine for the eucharist/mass (communion or Lord's supper) instead of grape juice, and it's done every week instead of just a few times a year. They also baptize people as a baby and then at age 13 they go through "confirmation" class and then profess they believe in Jesus at the end of the class in front of the church. They allow children to take of the eucharist before accepting Christ as their Savior. They do not think it is wrong to dance or go to secular movies, and they do not believe drinking is wrong when done in moderation. They are also theological evolutionists (they believe that God used evolution to create the world, even though they do not believe that humanity evolved. They just do not believe that the world is 6,000 years old like the baptists believe because they believe the six days refer to times periods and not a literal human's six days).

There are a few other differences, but these are the ones that are the few that I can remember at the moment. I used to be Baptist and am now going to an Episcopalian church (which is almost just like a Lutheran church), so I could easily tell you the differences. While I still do not agree with the baptism differences and allowing children to take it before accepting Christ, everything else they do and believe is in line with the Bible (actually more so, in my opinion, than the baptist way), so you and your boyfriend shouldn't have a problem as long as you keep in mind that you both still follow Christ. That is what TRULY matters.

I hope this answers your question.

What's music like in Evangelical and Lutheran churches?

What kind of churches do all that fun clapping hands, singing and dancing

As Anon said, you won't find any handclapping or dancing at a Lutheran church. Our worship service is just that, a worship service. We come before God asking for His forgiveness, His word, and His body, and then you have our responses to these gifts of grace and love. We do not see it as a time of "partying", it is a time to come humbled and needy.
