Catholic Christians: Why is Jesus usually depicted on the Cross in your religious art and jewelry?
Mother of Pearl, Sea and Sand Handmade Rosary

What is the significance of this? Do "post-Easter" crosses have a place in your religious art and Jewelry too?

To Whom It May Concern: If you really want to completely lose my respect, post something anti-Catholic.

The significance is nearly as old as the faith itself -- it is a constant reminder of what Jesus suffered for us. It was also a teaching tool to show converts (who were not literate, or where language barriers existed) in the form of paintings and sculpture -- again, the horrible death Jesus suffered for us. It's also a unifying symbol; a way to recognize a brother or sister in Christ on sight.

"Post Easter" crosses (I am assuming you mean the Risen Christ, or a plain cross) can also be worn, kept in the house, etc -- but it really is the Crucifix that reminds us of His sacrifice.

Actually Priscilla, I read last year something from the Vatican about those Risen Christ crosses, and how they shouldn't be used. It'll be an easy internet search if you are interested.

What's the one religious jewelry item that you see people wearing that you assume they're Catholic?
Religious Icons Charm Bracelet Close Up 2

I'm Catholic and I want something that when people see it they'll know my faith, not for selfish purposes and hypocrisy but because I believe outward religious symbols help celebrate our faith and show it is important to us.

To the preacher, the Chick tract pusher, and the you-keep-Jesus-on-the-cross contributors: It's considered courteous here to at least thank the asker for the two points when posting a comment that doesn't even try to address the person's actual question but merely uses it as a soapbox for one's own prejudice.

And to answer the question, here's a true story:

One day last year my daughter (in her 20s) came into my home office with a frown, her Miraculous Medal in her hand. She hadn't taken it off since receiving it in RCIA. The metal had oxidized, or the plating migrated, or some such thing -- and as she is allergic to nickel, she was developing a medal-shaped rash.

I remembered a conversation we'd had at the time she got it; I had wanted to get her a small crucifix similar to mine, but she said she would prefer the medal.

"It says something about me, Mom", she had explained. "It's emphatically Catholic."

I certainly couldn't argue with that. Although not many non-Catholic Christians wear crucifixes, either, there is definitely something about wearing a MM that makes an unmistakable statement.

Just a few days later, while changing my clothes, I got a button or something caught in the chain of my crucifix and it broke.

Well, I thought, do I replace the chain? I then remembered my reasoning behind choosing such a tiny crucifix -- I hadn't wanted to appear to others, especially my evangelical relatives, to be shoving my Catholicism in their faces.

Yet here was my daughter, a brand-new Catholic that year, embracing not only the graces of that medal but also its value as a visible declaration of her love for Christ and his Blessed Mother and faithfulness to His Church.

"Be not afraid", said our dear Pope John Paul II, whose papacy began just days after this daughter was born.

I obtained another Miraculous Medal for her -- one that won't cause a rash. And I now wear one, too.

Would you call this person a devout Catholic?
Religious Icons Charm Bracelet Close Up 1

I really like this guy but think our differences in religion might be a problem. Just wondering your opinion of his behavior and religion:

1. His family is extremely religious...they're catholic, sent their children to catholic schools and sometimes seem a little extreme to me. He is very close to all of his family.
2. He drinks alcohol a lot and gets drunk with friends
3. He goes to strip clubs with friends when on vacation
4. He uses cuss words but doesn't say GD
5. He drank alcohol before 21
6. He is saving sex until marriage but he does other sexual acts with females
7. Wears jewelry which symbolizes the catholic faith. His father wears it too.
8. Goes to church every sunday and sometimes on wednesday
9. Goes to bars a lot

Thanks!

Well the no sex before marriage thing and the alcohol sure sounds Catholic but devout?

No, I've known devout catholics and they don't go to strip clubs and while some of them have done non-penetrative sex acts, the guilt they pile on themselves means it rarely happens again. As for alcohol, the ones with Irish heritage seem to drink, whereas the few with Asian heritage only do so occassionally, so I think that's more cultural than religious.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not religious, I'm an atheist, so I don't judge people for going to strip clubs or for their private business with their girl/boyfriend, but it would be hypocritical for a devout catholic or any hard-core christian whose bible tells them that even looking or thinkingin lustfully of a woman is the same as adultery (Matt 5:28) to do those things if they're serious about their religion.

His family sounds quite devout and he seems to go through the motions because that's what he knows. The no sex before marriage thing is probably a guilt trip from his upbringing, because he tries to sneak his way around the rules with the strip club thing and other sexual acts. If he wasn't worried about Hell, he'd probably go ahead and have sex.

Wearing catholic jewellery is hardly an indication of dedication to his faith, just a measure he takes to give the appearance of being Catholic.

I'm doing an Essay for my Popular Culture paper and I need to write an essay on an everyday artifact...?
Religious Icons Charm Bracelet Full

I chose my charm bracelet, its got different catholic saints on it and i need to relate it to how its part of my experience of pop culture using theories. I was thinking of going along the lines how everyone seems to be wearing religious jewelry now days??? But I'm so stuck! Please anyone... =[

that actually sounds like a good idea. you could reference madonna and her (sorry about the spelling) kabalah thing. i know she's not the only one; a lot of other celebs have picked it up. you can say how a lot of teenagers are getting tattoos of old religious symbols even though they don't know what they mean.

  • Italian Religious Jewelry: A Meaningful Piece Of Gold Catholic Jewelry

The writer of the following article once had an excellent opportunity to purchase some gold Catholic jewelry. On one day in December of 2004 she toured the Cathedral mentioned in the following article. Those who like to wear jewelry might wonder why the writer did not purchase any gold Catholic jewelry, after taking her tour. The writer had earlier lived in New Mexico for two years. During that time, she bought only one piece of Native American jewelry for herself. The writer prefers pins over bracelets, necklaces or earrings. Only at the Grand Canyon did she find any Native American pins. At the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, in Los Angeles , CA, one can find many small alcoves. Each of those alcoves has a miniature altar. Those tiny altars are not meant for performance of idol worship....

Rebel leader takes credit for Moscow bombings - International News ...

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) – According to the Kavkaz Center Web site, Umarov said the bombings were in retaliation for a "massacre conducted by the Russian occupants against the poorest residents of Chechnya and Ingushetia." The video was allegedly taped on the same day as the attacks.

Umarov was referring to an incident in February when Russian forces conducted a special operation where innocent civilians were killed. Speaking in the video, Umarov said the victims were merely gathering garlic to make a living.

Russian officials had later admitted that at least four civilians were killed in the operation near the Ingushetian village of Arshty in February. After investigating the incident, the officials admitted that it was "the season to collect wild garlic."
