Will a Working at a Crisis Pregnancy Center Look Favorable to a Roman Catholic Law School?
ji6053.JPG

I am pro-life and I have recently joined Students for Life and Feminists for Life at my college. I am also going to volunteer at a crisis pregnancy center.

I was hesitant to put this on my applications to secular law schools since I am assuming many of the adcoms will be extremely liberal and not like that I am pro life....

But then I found this really cool Roman Catholic school that I want to attend.

Will they like the pro-life stuff?

Make an application and find out... Then let us all know.

And, good luck.

Is it wrong to fire someone from a Catholic school because they live common-law?
ji5930.JPG

My girlfriend got fired from the Catholic school she works at because we live common-law. Yet, the school employs non-Catholics. All staff are required to live in accordance with Catholic teachings, but how can non-Catholics be expected to follow a religion they arern't part of.? Does this sound fair? Should we try and pursue this matter legally?

Is it wrong?

Morally: yes
Legally: probably not. Catholic schools are usually private, so the terms of employment don't have to meet all of the standards that public schools do.

Also, it may depend on her job, for instance if the non-Catholics are support staff, but your girlfriend is a teacher, then the issue may have to due with "influencing the children."

Was my law school ever a good fit for me?
ji5931.JPG

When looking back, I had the deck stacked against me. I should have never enrolled. Here were the reasons why I didn't fit in:

1. being a racial minority when whites make up a majority of the entering class.

2. being Protestant in a Catholic law school.

3. not having a relative who is a well established lawyer or judge.

4. not willing to brown nose.

5. being introverted.

6. not knowing anyone/having classmates from college upon entering.

Yes, it is bad match.

My mother-in-law wants my children to go to Catholic school, my husband and I came up with a compromise?
ji6054.JPG

She wants our children to go there since its her family tradition. Everyone in her family went to private Catholic school. My husband went there all thru school.

My husband and I agreed that we are not religious and do not plan to raise our children as Catholics or any other religion for now.

My mother-in-law is VERY upset about this and even offered to pay for Catholic schooling since we cannot afford the tuition which is nearly $10,000 a year.

We talked about it and thought a fair compromise was to allow our children to go to Catholic school, but we do not want them to be baptized, participate in communion or catechism. The school allows children who are not Catholics to attend the school, the just charge a little more for tuition.

Do you think we are being fair?

I think you are being more than fair. You are the parents of your children and are responsible for them.

Your mother-in-law is showing her love and concern for you, your husband, and your children in the wrong way.

Were you married in the Catholic Church?

If you were not, then please ignore the next sentence.

If you were, then you and your husband freely promised to raise your children as Catholic. Are you planning to abide by your promise?

With love and prayers in Christ.

What are her chances getting into Havard or Columbia law school?
ji6052.JPG

My friend stats:

UCLA-3.5
LSAT-175

Catholic school Math teacher (2 years)
SAT prep tutor for inner city children
Red Cross volunteer
A lot of community services at Uganda

Language- Swahili and English

Major-philosophy
Minor-math

She is from Uganda but lived in Sudan for a while until she was 10 then she came to America with her family.

What are her chances for her dream coming true to get into any of those law schools?

According to one website, her LSAT score is at the 75% for Harvard, and close for Yale. Her GPA is a little low, but grades tend to be less important. Additionally, she has a great story to tell. There's no reason (here) that she shouldn't be able to get into a top 5 school.

  • Fundraiser accused of duping Mass. Catholic school into believing ...

&Mdash; For the Venerini Sisters, it seemed like the answer to their prayers: An anonymous donor, lined up by a professional fundraiser, willing to give at least $3 million to finance an expansion of a private school run by the order of Roman Catholic nuns.

The would-be benefactor, known only by his first name of Arthur, chatted amiably on the telephone with school administrators. And although no money exchanged hands, trust — or perhaps naivete — led the nuns to hire a general contractor and begin construction on the project at the Venerini Academy in Worcester. The work would stop months later when it become clear there was no money — and no Arthur, Attorney General Martha Coakley said.

"It was an extraordinary story of faith ... without much to back it up," Coakley said Thursday in announcing the arrest of the fundraiser, Michael Hlady, of Greenville, R.I.

Post-NCLB Test-Score Gains: Compared to What? - Inside School ...

An item I wrote last week about a Northwestern University study that found a link between the No Child Left Behind law and rises in students' math scores generated a fair amount of comments, most of them disbelieving of the results. No one, though, seemed to question the researchers' use of Catholic schools as a comparison group, which I thought was pretty novel.

    Perhaps they might have, though.

Researchers Manyee Wong, Thomas D. Cook, and Peter Steiner chose Catholic schools because they were not subject to the same sanctions facing public schools under the federal law. But other research suggests that this may not be the most convincing control group for gauging NCLB's impact.

That's because enrollment in Catholic schools dropped significantly right after NCLB was enacted—and right about the time the began running stories uncovering the Boston archdiocese's role in child sex-abuse scandals in that city. You'll recall that this news was followed up over the next few years with stories of similar scandals across the country. Read the appendix in this 2009 working paper by Thomas Dee and Brian Jacob for details on that enrollment trend.
