catholic audio book

I have qualms about buying it, sense they give it out for free to illiterate drunks. Please help me i have some questions that i need to find on my own. And no i do not want to switch religions. Thank You

There's this old man on my meals-on-wheels route, and every time I deliver his meal he has me make his bed, and while I'm doing that he tells me that Baptist theology is "crippled" (I'm a Baptist) and then tries to get me to go catholic.

I don't really mind, I think it's funny. Anyways, he told me that he was feeling a little depressed on friday, and it made me sad.

How can I cheer him up? I have the "Word of Promise" audio Bible, and I was going to burn him a copy of the Book of John or something.

He can't really eat anything, so I can't bake him brownies or anything.

What do I do?

You're a dear and thoughtful young lady. Bless your heart for seeing him as a man in need of kindness, your desire to respect his faith, and your charitable amusement about his "Baptist" comments!

You've received many very good suggestions here. I would just like to underscore one in particular, and that is to find out if Holy Communion is being brought to him as part of the community ministry of the local parish ... and if not, please call the parish office and ask them to contact him. Often that's the only way we're aware that homebound Catholics are in need of this -- when someone who cares about them calls.

I hope you're able to follow up on some of these suggestions. Even just one of them would mean a lot to this man -- and your thoughtfulness even more. God bless you!

I think that Br Beckwith is a "revert" and is returning home to the Catholic Church: he found Jesus in an eveangelical protestant movement and later found that what he was looking for was also in the Catholic Church all the time. I hope others who in ignorance(or through spiritual malnutrition,seeking to be fed and come to a living relationship with the Trinity) have left the Church may come home and find in the Catholic Church the fullness of Christianity and indescrible abundance of grace and spiritual fulfillment in Jesus the Lord,Savior and One Everlasting Head of the Church that Mr Beckwith had.
Frank also studied the questions and sources throughly and found that the Catholic doctrine was the more fully evangelical,biblical,patristic and comprehensively true.

Okay laugh all you want, but I have had to read 8 freaking books this summer, and if I have to turn another page I might flip. All you Catholic school people, you feel my pain right?

Most public libraries have audio books. Try there first.

Over the holidays I had a discussion with my Dad about religion and he brought up the point that I have never read the Bible so how can I critcize it? He made a good point.

Are all Bibles the same? Is there a difference between say a Catholic Bible and say an Anglican Bible? It would only be fair that I also read the books of the Jewish and Muslim faiths. How much do the 3 religious books differ from each other? Is there somewhere I could find out more details about these books and the different chapters? Are the chapters in the Bible placed in an order of some kind, should it be read from front to back? What is "the Good News Bible"? Can I get the Bible in audio-book form?

I am not reading these books for any reason other than to educate myself. I am not looking to be saved or anything, so please don't give me your opinions on the subject of religion. I want to know where to start my journey of learning about the Bible.
Toadaly - My father is a member of the Masonic Lodge and a Shriner, I don't know his title but he is a past-master and he has memorized much of the Bible, not just read it.

If you're reading to educate yourself, you MUST MUST MUST get a good study Bible or study guide. I can't emphasize that strongly enough. No matter what some people say, there's just too much stuff in the Bible that needs explanation, historical context, etc.

I'll tell you the best study Bible out there is the Jewish Study Bible, but it only contains the Hebrew Bible or "Old Testament". If you're looking to research the Jewish scriptures anyway, this is a great place to start, and it will give you a better grounding to read the New Testament:

The next best "study Bible" I've found is the New Jerusalem Bible. It contains all of the Catholic books of the Bible, which is (if I recall) 73 books, as opposed to the 66 books of Protestant Bibles. But it's just a great translation, with just the right amount of notes and introductory material, and extremely little of it screams "Catholic"; it's a great all-around Bible for learning. (Make sure to get the "regular" version with the notes, not the "reader's" version with no notes).

Other than those two, you might try either the Oxford Annotated or the New Interpreter's Study Bible. They're both comparable, and contain all the books used by any Christian denomination, including Anglican (which does differ slightly from the Catholic or other Protestant versions). They use the New Revised Standard Version, which is the version most used in scholarly circles, quite accurate and understandable.

Finally, you might want a study guide, especially if you don't get a study Bible. (But again, I can't emphasize strongly enough - GET a Study Bible!) I can't tell you what the best one out there is, but I've found Asimov's guide quite useful, and obviously as an Atheist, you won't find it biased towards Christian ideas. It's just there to try and explain the historical and contextual ideas you'll find within the Bible, to try and make some sense of them:
