Why are the Sunday readings from the bible by protestants different from those of catholics?

The Sunday and daily readings in The Catholic Church are the same every day and the same in all locations every where in the world. While the protestant readings differ from the catholic readings and from each other. Thus creating a divided effort. Why not all get on the same page. Especialy since we all believe the bible to be a living rather than a historic document

The Protestant churches do not have the same level of organization that we do. The Methodists, Baptists, Episcopals(Anglicans), Pentecostals, etc. all have different leaders. I think some denominations do not even have bishops and are only organized at the level of a single congregation. It would be nice if we could move closer to reunification of the Church, but that won't happen for a long time. At least they are reading the Bible in church just like we do ( even though some Protestants think we do not). A lot of them include some fun music and other entertainment too. All in all they aren't bad. I just wish fundamentalists would stop saying we are not Christians. I wonder why they do not bash the Orthodox too, but I am glad that they don't.

Extraordinary Daily Readings for Wednesday in Easter

Extraordinary Daily Readings for Wednesday in Easter

My friend says that it's wrong for the Catholic Church to have set Bible readings for each day...?

(The Catholic Church has a three year cycle of Bible readings for Mass and daily study that covers the entire Bible in that time period.)

My friend says that we should let God guide us into what to read and that having a schedule limits our ability to get what we need out of the Bible... What do you think?
It's not just Catholics that do this. Orthodox, Anglicans/Episcopalians, Lutherans, and Methodists also have a set schedule or liturgy.
The Church forbid Bible reading before 1970?! Nonsense! I have a Bible from decades before then that says in the beginning that indulgences are granted to anyone who reads their Bible daily.

The readings insure that everyone hears the entire message. A priest though, led by the Spirit has the ability to present further scriptural references and messages in his sermon.

The cycle of readings is not intended to block the word of the spirit, but to insure that Catholics hear more of the Bible than they are likely to hear in churches where preachers only preach on their favorite verses.

In a typical Sunday service, a Catholic will read and hear the following from the Bible:
A psalm.
A reading from the Old Testament.
A reading from one of the letters of the New Testament
A gospel reading.
The Last Supper.
The Lord's Prayer.

Along with this is the sermon, from which the priest may reference more scripture, as well as one of the historical creeds.

People can bash the Catholic church all they like, but it is deeply rooted in scripture. The difference is that Catholics don't gain pride by knowing chapter and verse ... the original scriptures weren't written that way. Memorizing the chapter and verse is a modern creation that didn't exist in Christ's time.

If a Catholic knows the Lord's prayer, is it really necessary to know where, exactly in the Bible that comes from? I tend to think that many protestants simply exhibit pride in being able to cite chapter and verse. It's a legalistic attitude, which Christ spoke out against, that requires pointing to the specific verse by name and number.

Whoever said that he feels sorry for catholics not being encouraged to read the bible?

The whole catholic mass has songs and readings containg biblical verses... then we hear a old testament reading and a new testament we sing a psalm we here a reading from the gospel and alot of catholics go to church daily... all people are encouraged to read the bible the church offers an indulgence for those who read the bible for an hour daily the church asks for people to read the bible daily... kids in catholic school get taught from the bible daily in religious class... priest must read the bible daily for more then an hour and must read the psalms .... why do you think that we don't read the bible?

Catholics are encouraged to read the Bible. The Catechism of the Catholic Church says:

The Church forcefully and specifically exhorts all the Christian faithful to learn ‘the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ,' by frequent reading of the divine Scriptures. ‘Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ.'

With love in Christ.

Why do so many of you accuse Catholics of not having a Bible or reading one?

I have been A Catholic All my life and got a Bible as a gift when I was a child.

The Catholic church also during mass follows the Catholic missal which contains daily and weekly readings taken "From the Bible. " I also can say for all of Catholics I know and talk to have a Bible themselves.

So again why the accusing of not reading a Bible?
(Do people ever consider it a sin for insulting others who believe in the Lord or any of His Saints?)
Speed of thought your listen to the bible during the Gospels and readings and then the Priest gives you a lecture about it during Mass is that not education? Otherwise "listening to the Words of God"

Mim I can honestly say no I have not read the Bible all the way through for I am still in college and dont have enough time to sit and read anything but textbooks so accus all you want for all i know I am sinless
grace fule yes the Catholic Church does have Bible studie sessions you can attend

Catholics believe that the “bible alone theory” is not what the bible teaches.
The Bible is the word of God. In sections 131-133 the Catechism we find this:
“Hence “access to sacred scripture out to be open wide to the Christian faithful”…
Therefore the study of the sacred page should be the very soul of sacred theology…
The Church forcefully and specifically exhorts all Christian faithful.. To learn the surpassing knowledge
Of Jesus Christ. By frequent reading of the Divine Scriptures. Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of
Christ…The Church is telling Catholics read your bible….The Catholic Mass is totally Bible centered…
The Processional March of each Mass is lead by a person holding the Cross and then a person holding the Bible up high in the air…The Catholic Church protected the bible across the ages until the Guttenberg Printing Press was invented. Century after Century , Monks in Monasteries faithfully copied scripture they were incredibly accurate. The Catholic Church was the first in the World to say that the Bible is unerring.
We said this 1100 years before any Protestant denomination existed. Ironically, the way Evangelical denominations have decided to have Unity with each other is to agree not to look at scriptural references that they are in disagreement about. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that Bible Alone is the only authority. However the Bible does say Jesus founded his Church and Gave it all authority. (Mat 16-18).
Evangelicals often trust an “Authorities” interpretation of scripture rather than their own personal one.
Every Evangelical that goes to a Bible study is being influenced by someone else’s interpretations of Scripture. We see the thousands of Denominations all of which claim to get their faith from the same Bible. And believe contrary Doctrines. Some turn to The New International Bible commentary in order to get the correct interpretation. So even for Martin Luther Scripture Alone wasn’t enough he acknowledged their had to be a “Human Authority “ governing it he just thought he should be this “Authority” Not the Catholic Church.. Over 33,000 denominations were formed because people came to irreconcilable differences over Scripture. If Truth is not relative then their Can be only one Truth. Therefore not everyone who honestly feels They are led by the Holy Spirit in reading Scripture is correct . Its sad but True… We sometimes need help interoperating Scripture Acts 8:30-31... Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition make up a single Sacred Deposit of The Word Of God…The teaching Church, with its Oral Traditions was Authorities .Indeed even the Gospels themselves are Oral Tradition That has been written Down Luke 1.1-4 To believe In Sola Scriptura is to ignore everything else Christ has brought to us. Traditions of the Early Fathers and Christians Writings of the early Chuch Fathers Christians and even traditions from the Old Testaments

Question for Catholics...?

What does being Catholic mean to you? Why do you like the religion so much? Do you feel close to God? What are your thoughts about saints and Mary and how do they help with your walk with the Lord?

Also, do you think its okay for a Catholic to join a (nondenominational) christian Bible study?

And, I am looking for a good Bible. Not a necessity, but I would like a new one if I find one I like. Here are some things i like in my Bibles:
-"extras" (I dont know what they are called, but the things that are bonus to the Scripture that reflect on certain verses and how they apply to us)
-Concordinance
- if possible, daily (or sunday) readings.

Thanks so much.. I am a "boarder line Catholic" meaning that I use both Catholic and Protestant things and go to both kinds of church services.
K thanks.... you all have reminded me whats wrong with the catholic church.....

I will choose the person who says to go to a nondenominational church for best answer... i already do and love it!!! And I connect with Jesus and believe His Word is all that is needed!!

Oh and the person who said they belive the only way to heaven is in the Catholic church.. prepare to be disappointing when you see millions, even billions of protestants in Heaven, sister!

Now please, I have nothing but respect for the Catholic church, but its just not for me. There is too many things that are just not needed. God seems unreachable to me in that church!!

So... as I say to all my friends...

I <3 Catholics, they don't bother me (unless when they say the Virgin Mary or a saint said to then....)... its the church and its "teachings:

I hope and pray that you can see the light from the other side someday, just to see it, like i did... now im protestant!!!

Catholicism is all about religion and ritual, alot of what they do, like pray to mary is against the bible. Stick with a charismatic nondenom church... learn who the Holy Spirit is, He's the greatest!!! Its not about lighting candles and hail mary's its about a genuine relationship with Jesus! He is full of grace and love for you and from what I've learned of Him, he's not a big fan of religious crap and rules made up by man!

  • Cardinal Levada Denounces NY Times Media Attacks on Pope ...

ROME (CNA/EWTN News) - In a statement released on the Vatican website , Cardinal William J. Levada charged that the recent media attacks on the Holy Father by the New York Times concerning sex abuse within the Church are "deficient by any reasonable standards of fairness" that American readers have come to expect from major media outlets.

Cardinal Levada, who is the current prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), began his remarks by addressing a recent New York Times article by senior columnist Laurie Goodstein which leveled charges against the Vatican's handling of a Milwaukee sex abuse case. The prelate also took issue with an accompanying editorial which echoed Goodstein's perspective.

"I am not proud of America's newspaper of record, the New York Times," Cardinal Levada wrote."Both the article and the editorial are deficient by any reasonable standards of fairness that Americans have every right and expectation to find in their major media reporting," stressed the cardinal, who then discussed what he found to be most troubling in Goodstein's March 24 article.

Life In The Spirit: Daily - 4/2/10

In bible study this morning, I listened to four different men speak specifically about how a commitment to the Eucharist, both at mass and in adoration, has resulted in changes in their lives. Change that are almost imperceptible at first, but can be seen over time. I listened to men talk about developing a true hunger for Christ in the Eucharist, and the difference that they have been able to see in their lives since that has happened. It's happening with me too. For several years in my life I was very committed to reading and meditating on the Scriptures, and I grew a great amount spiritually. So much so that I was at a point where I didn't think I needed the Catholic Church. I hit a point where I didn't think the Sacraments were necessary. I could immerse myself in the Word and prayer,...
