Do Americans realize the Eastern Orthodox church is as old as the Catholic, but with fewer crimes to its name?
While on a road trip tossing empty beer bottles and beef jerky wrapers out the car window and shooting up road signs, I decided to check out St. Mary's Catholic Church and Cemetery in New Trier, Minnesota.

The vast majority of Protestant groups arose as a revolt against the Catholics ... but the Eastern Orthodox was already there (it and Catholicism used to be the same thing.) Why didn't Luther, Calvin and pals just hook up with Constantinople?

*Is Catholic*

First there is no such animal as the Eastern Orthdox Church. There the Russian Orthodox Church, the Greek Orthodox Church and many others, but they are not united as one Church.

Did you know that there are also Greek Catholic Churches? It depends on the way you look at things if you consider the Greek Orthdox Church to be the one that was broken away from, or the one that broke away.

Luther, Calvin, etc. tried to hook up with the Russian Orthodox. The Orthodox took one look at their theology and told them no you do not hold to the faith that has been handed down to us.

You should know in 1600's that the Greek Orthodox Church had become quite reduced due to Byzantium being destroyed by the Muslim invaders. The Russian Orthodox Church was the dominant Orthodox Church.

Ready for Prayer

:) Just for your information...coz I'm bored stiff....

Presbyterian, your religion was founded by John Knox in Scotland in the year 1560.

Protestant Episcopalian - an offshoot of the Church of England founded by samuel Seabury i nthe american colonies. A Congregationlist - a religion originated by Robert Brown in Holland in 1582.

A Methodist, your religion was luanched by John and Charles Wesley in England in 1744.

A Unitarian, Theophilus Lindley founded your church in London in 1774.

Mormon (Latter Day Saints) - Joseph Smith started your religion in Palmyra, NY in 1829.

Thanks for all your comments.....

Okay, I have accidentally omitted the Greek, Russian and syrian ordi churches...... yet before christianity existed, do you agree on this:

Jesus was Jewish and was a practising Jew. Hence Judaisim is one of the oldest "church". Prior to this religion, in China - Taoism and Confucius was also a religion in its own right. In some countries animilistic believes were a religion.... so which is the oldest??
What about Hinduism? Is it on old religion too? Before Christianity was borned, Hinduism flourished with Bhuddhism. That's when Europe was in the dark age / ice age.

As some of you had writtten, paganism was a religion in Europe.

Greece, The Middle East, etc were pagans.

My question still stands: How old is your church.

To those of you who had answered, based on your answers, is your religion unchanged throughout the centuries?
Thanks everyone for your very generous answers. An insight and indepth to my question.

Could I safely say this:

The oldest church/temple is the human body? When men and women walked the face of this earth.

The oldest religion is men and women. Religion created by us.

Atheism/agnosticism is founded by the big bang.......evidence? here it is: Animals, Plants, AND non-living things Don't know anything or will ever know about gods...Therefore, mater, energy, time, space, non-living things are all atheist/agnostic...which will also including egg cells, sperms, bacteria, viruses, atoms, etc are all members of this "disbelief church"

Did this good hearted Catholic man imacatholic2 give a good answer to my question about abuse in the church?

"I am ashamed that these so-called "Catholic Christians" committed these horrible crimes of [sexual] abuse which are contrary to the morals and principles of Christianity and the Catholic Church." And his [I'm a Catholic to] last statement:
"+ The Catholic Church is not a corrupt group of believers because a few of its members act in ways that are contrary to the principles of the Catholic Church" For any faith called Christian or otherwise are horrible crimes of [sexual] abuse which are contrary to the morals and principles of Christianity. And this is true in any faith not a corrupt group of believers just because a few members act in ways that are contrary to the principles of their form of faith.
So try not to show bigotry toward one faith above another in that area if over all their history record is a good one and than judge only by the accurate facts not bigotry inaccurate feelings. Like what are the right accurate history between the teachings and actions of the Catholic church [and others] and Jehovah's Witnesses? And who of them once they see their wrong ways sincerely repent from it in truth? Or that is stop doing it? Example:
History of first Christians, “A careful review of all the information available goes to show that, until the time of Marcus Aurelius [121-180 C.E.], no Christian became a soldier; and no soldier, after becoming a Christian, remained in military service.” (The Rise of Christianity, by E. W. Barnes, 1947, p. 333) “It will be seen presently that the evidence for the existence of a single Christian soldier between 60 and about 165 A.D. is exceedingly slight; . . . up to the reign of Marcus Aurelius at least, no Christian would become a soldier after his baptism.” (The Early Church and the World, by C. J. Cadoux, 1955, pp. 275, 276) “In the second century, Christianity . . . had affirmed the incompatibility of military service with Christianity.” (A Short History of Rome, by G. Ferrero and C. Barbagallo, 1919, p. 382) “The behavior of the Christians was very different from that of the Romans. . . . Since Christ had preached peace, they refused to become soldiers.” (Our World Through the Ages, by N. Platt and M. J. Drummond, 1961, p. 125) “The first Christians thought it was wrong to fight, and would not serve in the army even when the Empire needed soldiers.” (The New World’s Foundations in the Old, by R. and W. M. West, 1929, p. 131) “The Christians . . . shrank from public office and military service.” (“Persecution of the Christians in Gaul, A.D. 177,” by F. P. G. Guizot in The Great Events by Famous Historians, edited by R. Johnson, 1905, Vol. III, p. 246) “While they [the Christians] inculcated the maxims of passive obedience, they refused to take any active part in the civil administration or the military defence of the empire. . . . It was impossible that the Christians, without renouncing a more sacred duty, could assume the character of soldiers, of magistrates, or of princes.”—The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, by Edward Gibbon, Vol. I, p. 416." Seeing that let us get back to what [I'm a Catholic to] said yet about American Christians below: I am also ashamed that so-called "Christian Americans" [think about the history just above of staying out of government and war of first Christians]
+ Kept slaves until the end of the Civil War [Christ like?]
+ Imprisoned Japanese Americans in "relocation" camps during WWII [Christ like?
+ Keep getting into political scandals and winding up in prison. The worst case being Watergate which included the President of the United States [Christ like?]
+ Permitted the torture of prisoners [Christ like?]
+ Allow the killing of over a million unborn children every year [Christ like?]
Is [I'm a Catholic to] accurate here below if we note the history of the first Christians not mixing in human government business at all? Am I not being BOLD in a loving way to help you see a serious problem here?
[I'm a Catholic to] said, "I am glad that these scandals reflect on the individuals involved and not on the organizations to which these individuals belong:
+ The United States is not a corrupt group of citizens because a few of its members up to and including the President act in ways contrary to the principles of the U.S.
+ The Catholic Church is not a corrupt group of believers because a few of its members act in ways that are contrary to the principles of the Catholic Church."

When I was old enough to think for myself, I looked around at all of my spiritual options and then realized that Catholicism:

+ Satisfied both my faith and my reason
+ Inspired both great learning and great spirituality
I view Y!A as one of my ministries. I am here to answer questions about God, Christianity, and Catholicism.
I am not here to argue, rant, call people names, or spread hate.
I hope I meet these goals at least most of the time.
With love in Christ."
But when we see the true history of the first followers of Christ why do we not see true peace and security in all nations called Christian and no Christian going to war or mixing in human government business? A serious dilemma true? Now which Christian faith had to fight in the American courts for their religious rights other faiths had freely had for years because they would not fight in human wars or mix in government business just like first Christians? Why do not all Christian faith

The post is difficult to decipher; it is too long- to make heads or tails- Ima Catholic seems to consistently have good posts-

however, what your post does show, is that the human race is flawed, and that it carries out not just in the catholic church, but throughout all sectors of society, and religions as well -

The scandals really got to me; I don't want to see anyone in pain; but if people were to go back in time, they would remember that there were families, lawyers, boyscout masters, judges, who were also found to have committed these crimes; how many children were returned to their abusers? How many mothers have risked going to jail to try to protect their children. I am not saying the Catholic Church was right in how it dealt with it; what I am saying is, it was how our society was handling it back then in general.

The biggest crime to any abuse; sexual or not - is silence.

We need to be a proactive society - not to beat up on abusers- but to stop abuse when it happens from the get go- silence, is what keeps the abuse going on; silence is what causes people to remain ignorant about domestic violence, child abuse, sexual abuse -

Fellow Catholics (Mostly American Catholics): Have you noticed a decline in political labels within our parish?
Cathedral Sanctuary

(parishes)?

I was doing some cleaning around the house today and found an old church leaflet from 5 years ago. I thumbed through it for nostalgia's sake and noticed (remembered?) that there was a list of different masses for different *types of Catholics*.

In this spreadsheet, they listed when the "Traditional Masses" met, when the "Conservative Masses" met and when the "Liberal Masses" met. Upon seeing this again, it brought back memories of a divided parish, with 7 Sunday masses that never had more than 50 or so parishioners attending. Now, today in 2008, my parish has only 4 Sunday masses, all of which usually result in a full house! Not only that, but I rarely hear anyone at church referring to themselves as "Liberal Catholic" or "Conservative Catholic" rather we all just arrive, leave our political differences at the Holy Water Fount and all share in the divine sacrifice as SIMPLE CATHOLICS (sans adjectives!)

I have no clue if this homogenization has occurred in other parishes across the US (or across the world for that matter) and thought I'd ask you folks here.

Have you noticed a unification going on within your parish? If not, is there something YOU could be doing to diminish the animosity between different organs of the Body of Christ?

No i think thats basicly a west coast thing.

In the east the divide was less noticeable to begin with I believe.

Why Only 13 Deaf Catholic Ordained Ministers(Priests) in the whole world; is that sad to you?
Cathedral Blessed Virgin Mary Statue

Only 8 are in the U.S. of A.
Seems odd.

I know of 100's even thousands who are ordained ministers and are Deaf/Hard of Hearing or DeafBlind all over the world who use ASL(American Sign Language), and over 40 other sign languages who are Jehovah's Witnesses; many of which attend meetings for worship in full ASL, or other sign language-no interpreters. There are also DVD's in ASL and over 40 other sign languages given for no charge in a voluntary worldwide Bible Education work.

From the Boston Pilot, America's Oldest Catholic Newspaper:

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- "While the Catholic Church no longer considers deafness an impediment to ordination, there are only 13 priests in the world who were ordained deaf, said officials of the Pontifical Council for Health Care Ministry.

Msgr. Jean-Marie Mpendawatu, undersecretary of the council, said eight of the 13 work in the United States, two minister in Great Britain and one each serve in Brazil, Congo and South Korea."

"Archbishop Zygmunt Zimowski, president of the council, said there are more than 278 million deaf people in the world, and at least 1.3 million of them are Catholic."

To me no, not sad at all. But it still seemed curious. So I tried to find out more. Turns out most of the priests are new, because the Catholic Church did not allow ordination of deaf men as priests. That IS sad. In fact if you much about Father Tom (the first ever Catholic ordained priest) you will be very saddened by the acts of the Catholic church - that continue to this very day.

Out of curiosity I checked --

Father Tom Coughlin, first Deaf priest ordained in the US - 1977
http://www.spirituality.org/is/167/04.as p

Father Erich Anderson-Krengel, 1983 West Hartford, Conn (Episcopal)

Father Jim Hall, June 9, 2001, Aurora, Illinois

Father Thomas Servatius, 2003, Syracuse, NY.

In the summer of 2005 the 6th Catholic priest was ordained in the US.

Father Paul Zirimenya, June 9, 2007, from Uganda, works in San Francisco

Father Ghislain Bazikila, June 27, 2008, ordained in the Congo, Africa, works in San Francisco

Father Benedict Park Min-Seo, July 20, 2008, Seoul, Korea, Asia.

February, 2009 - first DeafBlind priest in San Antonio, Texas.

The most recent in the US was Father Shawn P. Carey, May 24 , 2009 in Boston - called #11.

Father Cyril Axelrod, a Deafblind priest of South Africa, working in Westminister, UK

But I found this statistic - only 4% of Deaf Catholics attend Mass nationwide.

Tens of thousands, including ex-atheist, to join church at Easter ...

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Tens of thousands of new Catholics, including an 89-year-old former atheist, will join the church at the Easter Vigil, April 3.

Those seeking baptism, called catechumens, and those already baptized who will be brought into full communion with the Catholic Church, called candidates, have reached the church through a variety of paths. Some have been led by family and friends, while others were motivated by powerful or painful personal experiences.

Jean Henry of Easton, Md., was raised a Methodist and "drifted" into the Episcopal Church, but rejected Christianity more than four decades ago after a major spat in the women's guild.

"I tried to heal it but I could not," Henry told The Dialog, newspaper of the Diocese of Wilmington, Del., which includes Maryland's Eastern Shore. "I thought I had a good, strong faith, but it was too shallow."
